Bunk beds save space, look attractive and offer an element of fun, making them ideal as the focal point for a child’s bedroom. One downside to these stacked twin (or larger!) beds, however, is that they can be difficult to make. Putting sheets, comforters and other bedding onto a bunk bed mattress –particularly the top bunk—can prove a difficult task. Fortunately, there are some tips that can take some of the stress and pain out of this process.
Probably the easiest way to make bunk beds is to purchase special bedding designed specifically with the top bunk in mind. This type of bedding includes both a fitted bottom sheet and a flat top sheet. The difference is that these two sheets are stitched together at the bottom and all along one side. With these inseparable sheets, all you have to do is climb up and stretch on the fitted sheet. Although this might still be a bit of a struggle, once the bottom sheet is on, the top sheet is in place as well. Make sure that you position the long side of the top sheet that is attached to the fitted sheet on the side of the mattress that is against the wall.
If you are unable to find these inseparable sheet sets, you can make your own by sewing a twin size flat sheet to the bottom and side of a coordinating twin size fitted sheet. In fact, this idea is especially beneficial if you are decorating the room in a unique color scheme or your child requests bed sheets with special characters on them. You can also create this type of sheet set for bunk beds that have two different mattress sizes, such as a full bed on the bottom and a twin on top.
Another way to exert less effort making a bunk bed is to only use a fitted sheet. Many children do not mind sleeping directly under a blanket without a flat sheet covering them, particularly if the top bunk is only used on occasion, such as when your child has sleepovers.
Finally, simplify the process by avoiding superfluous bedding such as bed skirts, blankets and bedspreads. Instead, top the bunk beds with fluffy comforters. These covers are attractive, forgiving and easy to work with. You can tuck them in around the edges of the mattress if you prefer, or simply leave them hanging effortlessly over the sides of the beds. Comforters are available in virtually any color, design or style you can imagine, as well, so you will not have to compromise taste in order to make your bunk beds look good.
